BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - A dog who got caught in the rain-swollen Los Angeles River has been saved in a dramatic airborne rescue.

The little brown dog was spotted in the raging river as a sudden thunderstorm swept the San Fernando Valley Friday afternoon.

Video showed a firefighter being lowered on a cable from a helicopter. He swam toward the dog, which had only its head and tail above water. The firefighter grabbed it in his arms and was lifted to the side of the concrete river channel.

Witnesses told KNBC-TV (https://bit.ly/1zHpmHJ ) the dog was swept about a mile downriver near the Burbank border.

The dog, a Shiba Inu, was in good health at a shelter. It had a collar but no identification. KNBC says firefighters nicknamed him “Lucky.”
