WYOMING, Mich. (AP) - An officer who was shot while responding to a domestic dispute in western Michigan has been identified as a 15-year veteran of the Wyoming Police Department.

Frank Hartuniewicz was recovering Friday at home after undergoing surgery. He was shot once below his protective vest.

Wyoming Police Chief James Carmody says officers were responding to a domestic dispute in the Grand Rapids suburb Thursday afternoon when Hartuniewicz was shot.

Carmody says the shooter fled, firing as he ran through the neighborhood. Officers returned fire, striking the 31-year-old man in the chest. He was in critical condition Friday at an area hospital. He has not yet been charged.

Carmody says the man and his wife had been drinking prior to officers being called to the home.
