EXETER, N.H. (AP) - University of New Hampshire provost and vice president of academic affairs Lisa MacFarlane has been chosen as the next principal of Phillips Exeter Academy.

MacFarlane will succeed Tom Hassan, the husband of Gov. Maggie Hassan who announced he would step down to focus more on his family and the governor’s political career.

MacFarlane is an alumna of Phillips Academy Andover and has Ph.D. and master’s degrees in American Culture from the University of Michigan. She has a bachelor’s degree in English from Princeton University.

The school conducted an international search for a new leader following Hassan’s announcement in July.

MacFarlane starts work at Exeter on Sept. 1. She is the school’s 15th principal and the second woman to lead Phillips Exeter since its founding in 1783.
