SOUTHGATE, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 74-year-old Southgate man fatally shot an armed neighbor who broke into his home.

Police officials say the neighbor entered the home through a window early Thursday morning while the couple who lives there was sleeping. They say the homeowners woke up when they heard a noise and the man went to investigate.

According to police, the neighbor pointed his gun at the 74-year-old, prompting him to fire a shot. The Detroit News reports 19-year-old James Clickard died at the scene. Police say Clickard was staying next door to the home where he was killed.

Police say the homeowner legally owned the gun used in the shooting.

The Southgate Police Department is investigating the incident with help from the Michigan State Police. Prosecutors likely will review the case.
