MILAN (AP) - Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman will be sidelined for longer than expected after surgery revealed further problems to his left knee, which was operated on last year.

Strootman underwent surgery in Amsterdam on Friday after injuring his knee again in a Serie A match and was expected to be out of action for about a month.

But the 24-year-old says on Twitter that “unfortunately some cartilaginous damage, caused by the knock in the Fiorentina match, was found too.”

Strootman adds “this means I have to take a longer rest period than anticipated earlier and I am extremely disappointed that it will take much longer before I can be back on the pitch again.”

The Netherlands international returned to action in November after undergoing surgery in March.
