INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Elementary and high schools across Indiana would be required to teach ethnic studies classes under a bill approved by a state Senate committee.

Bill sponsor Sen. Greg Taylor of Indianapolis says he believes it’s important for all students to have a good understanding of ethnic history and the role of racial diversity in today’s society.

The proposal gives school districts the option to choose how ethnic studies would be incorporated in their current social studies courses.

The Senate Education Committee voted 8-2 on Wednesday to advance the proposal to the full Senate for consideration.
