SAVOY, Ill. (AP) - University of Illinois Chancellor Phyllis Wise says she supports an advisory group’s recommendations for improving Willard Airport.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1vbc18N ) Wise is endorsing the panel’s recommendations for expanding air service, improving marketing of the airport and upgrading ground-travel access.

Willard Airport was created by the university in the 1950s. The school pays a $400,000 annual subsidy to support the air field.

The report recommended a management company operate the airport. If there’s no interest in such a proposal, it says the school should hire a chief executive officer who could negotiate with airlines and conduct other business.

It also recommended seeking financial contributions not only from businesses but the cities of Urbana and Champaign, and from Champaign County.
