SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - South Bend police say two people drowned in a pool at an apartment complex after the 19-year-old man started to struggle in the water and his 18-year-old girlfriend jumped in to try to help him.

Police Capt. Phil Trent tells the South Bend Tribune (https://bit.ly/1ClxLRo ) no one witnessed the drownings Friday of Jeannie Martin and Keontaye Watson. Trent says surveillance camera footage shows that about 20 minutes passed before another resident arrived and found the couple’s bodies.

Trent says the video showed Watson began to struggle when he got into the deep end and Martin got off a treadmill to try to help him.

St. Joseph County Coroner Randy Magdalinski says authorities had not uncovered anything suspicious about the deaths, ruling the drownings accidents.
