ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - State figures show the county that’s home to Maryland’s capital has its lowest unemployment rate in more than five years.

The Capital (https://bit.ly/1CYtTou ) reports state figures from December show Anne Arundel County finished 2014 with a jobless rate of about 4.6 percent. There were about 290,000 residents with jobs and a workforce of about 304,000 people.

December’s unemployment figures are the lowest since November 2008 when the county recorded 4.5 percent unemployment. The jobless numbers began rising in spring 2008 amid the deep recession. Nearly 8 percent of residents were out of work in February 2010.

A spokeswoman for Arundel Workforce Development Corp. says the new employment numbers indicate the county is now heading toward a situation where potential workers will be in short supply.
