JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi lawmakers are working to name a bridge in Lowndes County in honor of a colleague who died last year.

The U.S. Highway 82 span over the Tombigbee River would be named the “Senator Terry W. Brown Memorial Bridge.”

Brown was a Republican from Columbus and was president pro tempore of the Senate from January 2012 until his death this past September.

He served in the Mississippi House from 1988 to 2000, and ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1999. He started serving in the state Senate in 2004.

The bridge designation is in House Bill 44 (https://bit.ly/1yUdLCJ ). It has passed two committees and awaits consideration in the full House.
