LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A man accused of driving intoxicated and causing the death of his friend has been indicted on multiple charges in Las Cruces.

Dona Ana County prosecutors say Estevan Herrera was indicted Thursday on eight counts including homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated driving while under the influence.

According to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Herrera was speeding on Highway 28 on Oct. 24 when he ran a stop sign and crashed into a utility pole.

Prosecutors say Herrera’s friend, Patrick Nieto, was ejected from the car.

Herrera then allegedly tried to remove Nieto and then left the scene. He later returned with his mother.

Authorities say Herrera had a blood-alcohol level of .23.

His bond has been set at $20,000.
