LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say a man dubbed the “Rolled Sleeves Bandit” who was tied to seven Southern California bank robberies is now in custody.

An FBI statement says 38-year-old Damian Loren Newhart of Newport Beach was arrested at the dental practice his family owns in Inglewood and on Friday was remanded to federal custody. He has so far been charged with robbing one bank, a Citibank branch in Santa Monica Jan. 14.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says several tips came in from people who recognized the robber in news reports.

They had called their suspect the “Rolled Sleeves Bandit” because his shirt sleeves were rolled up in surveillance video of some robberies.

It wasn’t clear whether Newhart had hired an attorney and a message left at a business number wasn’t immediately returned.
