SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Spokane County sheriff says a deputy shot and wounded a man Friday night after the man fired at him from close range.

The Spokesman-Review reports (https://is.gd/tyPnzr ) that Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says the deputy and his K-9 chased the man, who fled on foot after the deputy pulled his car over in a traffic stop. The dog caught the man and took him to the ground.

The sheriff says the deputy was reaching down to arrest the man when the man rolled, drew a gun and fired a shot at the deputy. The deputy returned fire, hitting the man. Sheriff’s spokesman Mark Gregory says the wounded man was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Neither the unidentified deputy nor his K-9 was injured.

Gregory says two women in the car turned out to be sought on warrants and were arrested.
