BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The Department of Health says the total number of North Dakotans who have died from the flu this season has reached 38.

KXMB-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1DqNXxN ) that around 180 people in North Dakota have been hospitalized due to the flu.

Last season there were 9 flu-related deaths reported. Jill Baber with the health department tells the station that hospitals have gotten better at reporting flu cases.

The increased number of cases is also due to this year’s vaccine being a bad match for the season’s most prominent flu strain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the vaccine is only 23 percent effective this year.
