LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a crash that killed two 20-year-old Michigan State University students whose car went out of control and struck another vehicle on a bridge over the Manistee River.

The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. Friday on U.S. 131 in Wexford County’s Liberty Township. It’s about 20 miles south-southeast of Traverse City.

The sheriff’s department tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle and TV station WPBN-WTOM that the crash killed driver Carolena Elowski and passenger Maura Brandi. Both were from Charlevoix.

The driver and passenger in the other vehicle were taken to Munson Medical Center for treatment.

The sheriff’s department says it doesn’t know if road icing caused the crash. The National Weather Service says light snow stopped falling overnight and skies were clear at the time, with temperatures about 22.
