GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in Etowah County say they investigated nearly twice as many deaths that were linked to drug overdoses in 2014 than in 2013.

County Coroner Michael Head tells the Gadsden Times (https://bit.ly/1vMSRj9 ) he investigated 70 overdose deaths in 2014 and eight suspected cases are pending toxicology reports. Head says there were 37 drug overdose deaths in Etowah County in 2013.

Head says a majority of the deaths are linked to the abuse of prescription medications that are designed to help ease pain.
