CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Incoming state treasurer Mike Frerichs (FRAYR’-ikz) will celebrate his inauguration by helping on a community-service project and hosting receptions.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1yjSvqW ) the Democrat will sponsor a Jan. 11 event on a Habitat for Humanity project in Springfield before his Jan. 12 swearing-in.

Spokesman Dave Clarkin says Frerichs chose Habitat because of its work in rebuilding Gifford. That’s the northeast Champaign County town where Frerichs grew up and which was struck by a 2013 tornado.

Other events include receptions Jan. 10 at Big Grove Tavern in Champaign and Jan. 11 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in the capital.

Both events are free but reservations are required.

Frerichs replaces Republican Dan Rutherford (ROOTH’-ur-furd), who lost a primary election for governor.
