DENVER (AP) - An off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department sergeant was killed after he was struck by a passing car at the scene of a multi-car crash on U.S. 285 north of Conifer.

Authorities say that Sergeant Sean Renfro was directing traffic following the Saturday afternoon crash when another car lost control and crossed the highway, striking Renfro and another car.

Cpl. Heather Cobler, spokeswoman for the Colorado State Patrol, says it was snowing at the time of the accident and the road was covered with snow.

Cobler says Renfro was pronounced dead at the scene. At least two others were injured in the initial crash, including one who was taken to a hospital with significant injuries.

The Denver Post (https://dpo.st/1BuNtWx ) reports that Renfro was a 15-year veteran of the department.
