MELROSE, Mass. (AP) - Police say a man is in custody after leading officers on a chase ended when he drove into a Boston-area river.

Melrose police said 42-year-old John Kellum of Melrose faces his fifth drunken driving charge, as well as charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon-his vehicle, and driving violations.

Police who had reports of an intoxicated driver found Kellum at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He allegedly crashed a pickup truck into two parked cars, then rammed a police cruiser.

Police followed Kellum into nearby Malden, where he allegedly drove at another Melrose cruiser, damaging it.

Police said Kellum then drove on flat tires into the Malden River, waded in waist-deep and tried to swim away from firefighters trying to rescue him.

He was taken to a hospital. It’s not known if he has a lawyer.
