PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (AP) - A Westchester County correction officer earned $1.2 million during his 17 years on disability - for injuring his wrist slipping on lettuce.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1A8RcvF ) that 55-year-old Jesus Encarnacion (hay-ZOOS’ en-car-nah-see-ON’) is now retiring.

The county is removing him from its payroll. But Encarnacion is still fighting the state for denying him a higher disability pension.

To get that, Encarnacion has to prove he was permanently disabled by an inmate’s intentional action. An inmate had tossed the lettuce on which he slipped. The state rejected that argument and government doctors say he was not permanently disabled.

Encarnacion’s doctor has said he couldn’t go back to work.
