BOSTON (AP) - An off-duty Boston police officer is free on $500 bail after pleading not guilty to assaulting an Uber driver.

Forty-year-old Michael Doherty was arraigned Monday on charges including assault and battery, civil rights violations and using a motor vehicle without authority.

Defense lawyer Kenneth Anderson said Doherty disputes the charges and is the real victim.

Prosecutors said the online car service driver took Doherty to South Boston early Sunday. Prosecutors said Doherty told him they were at the wrong address, used a racial slur and hit him. The driver got out and Doherty drove away.

Prosecutors said a motorist gave the driver a ride and caught up with Doherty, who got out of the car and hit the Uber driver again. Doherty left before police arrived but turned himself in.

The 16-year police veteran is on leave.
