WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware’s secretary of transportation is leaving the post after three years to do the same job in Colorado.

Delaware’s Department of Transportation announced Secretary Shailen Bhatt’s decision Monday.

Bhatt says he’s always tried to go where he felt he could do the most good and will always treasure the time he’s spent in Delaware.

Bhatt will leave at the end of the month to become the executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Gov. Jack Markell says Bhatt did an excellent job during challenging times that saw a significant debt load and severe weather events. Bhatt’s tenure also saw the temporary closure last year of Interstate 495 over the Christina River in Wilmington after a large pile of dirt was dumped next to the bridge, causing several supporting columns to tilt.

Markell has nominated Jennifer Cohan, currently director of the Division of Motor Vehicles, to replace Bhatt as transportation secretary. Her appointment is subject to state Senate confirmation.
