MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The only Democrat elected to statewide office in Wisconsin skips Gov. Scott Walker’s swearing in ceremony to attend a meeting out of state.

Secretary of State Doug La Follette said Monday that he is in Phoenix for the Western States Land Commissioners Association winter conference. La Follette says he was not skipping the inaugural ceremony to send a political message, but because he is doing the state’s business at the meeting.

La Follette says he was sworn into office in a private ceremony last month.

La Follette is the only statewide officer not sworn in during the ceremony. In addition to Walker, others who took the oath are Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Attorney General Brad Schimel and Treasurer Matt Adamczyk. They are all Republicans.
