FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Sixteen months after a man was fatally shot by a Fairfax County police officer in the doorway of his Springfield home, county officials have released the name of the officer who shot him.

The county said in a statement Monday that Private first class Adam Torres shot John Geer in August 2013. Torres has been on paid leave since the shooting. The statement says Torres fired a single shot after Geer lowered his hands while negotiating with police. Geer had guns inside his house.

An autopsy showed that Geer bled to death before police entered the home.

The shooting is the subject of a federal criminal investigation and a civil lawsuit. Delays in the investigation have attracted the attention of Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, among others.
