RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A grand jury has charged a Richmond teenager with murder in the death of an 8-year-old boy.

Seventeen-year-old Mairese Washington also is charged with strangulation and malicious wounding in an attack on the boy’s sister.

Online court records show the Richmond grand jury handed up the indictments on Monday.

Washington is accused of killing the boy and attacking his 12-year-old sister on May 1, 2014. The girl told authorities that she and her brother were playing behind their home when the attack occurred.

Media outlets report that prosecutors withdrew earlier indictments in November. Prosecutors said then that they wanted to potentially obtain more forensic evidence from items sent to the state lab for testing.

Washington will be tried as an adult.
