STURGIS, Mich. (AP) - A missing bell has returned to its rightful place atop a historic school in Sturgis 40 years after it was stolen.

Sheldon Fieberkorn of Sturgis was instrumental in finding the bell that had been missing from Worden School since 1974. He tells the Sturgis Journal (https://bit.ly/1rW1Enk ) that the family in possession of the bell agreed to return it on the condition they remain anonymous. Fieberkorn says it was being kept inside of a building.

Worden School was relocated to a different area of Sturgis in May. The one-room schoolhouse has since been renovated with a replica of the original entryway and a new roof. Eight desks also have been donated back to the school.

The superintendent of Burr Oak Community Schools says the building has almost returned to its earliest form. He says he hopes the school can eventually become a miniature museum.

The bell was returned to Worden School last week and will ring when school resumes.
