PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Police Bureau has drafted an expanded policy for dealing with mentally ill suspects.

The Oregonian reports (https://bit.ly/1tD5fCo ) it stresses recognizing characteristic of mental illness. The directive also requires officers to avoid unnecessary violence and potential civil liability.

The policy follows a settlement last summer between the city and the U.S. Justice Department requiring changes to policies, training and oversight.
