PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona official has approved a Colorado-based company’s application to provide ambulance service in Phoenix and the rest of Maricopa County.

Department of Health Services Director Will Humble announced Tuesday that he had approved Greenwood Village-based American Medical Response’s application for a certificate of necessity after reviewing an administrative law judge’s order that recommended approval.

Scottsdale, Arizona-based Rural/Metro Corp. already provides ambulance service in Maricopa County under a state certificate. It has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization but continues to operate.
