BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Chris Thomas knocked down the first of two free throws with :01 left in the game to lift Texas Southern to a 59-58 win over Southern in a Southwest Conference battle Monday night.

Deverell Biggs scored 20 points to lead the Tigers (5-10, 2-0 SWAC), who shot 41.3 percent from the field (19 of 46) and hit just 2 of 11 shots from distance.

Texas Southern is perhaps the hottest team in the conference, riding high after upset wins over No. 25 Michigan State and Kansas State before topping Alcorn State in its opener.

Southern (4-12, 1-1), the defending conference regular season champions, lost to No. 22 Baylor by four points and No. 9 Iowa State by 10 before posting a 68-56 win over Prairie View in the conference opener.

Trelun Banks had 16 points to lead Southern, which shot 24 of 57 from the field (42.1 percent).
