MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a 40-year-old man who lived with his mother beat her and broke her phone so she couldn’t call for help.

Tyler Hovey of Maquoketa is charged with domestic assault, obstruction of emergency communications and interference with official acts.

The Quad-City Times (https://bit.ly/1xNdq6f ) reports officers responded to the home after receiving a report about a disturbance.

Police say Hovey had rammed his mother’s head into a wall and hit her on the head with her own shoe. When officers tried to arrest Hovey, they say he resisted and fought with officers.

A protective order has been issued against Hovey so he can’t see or talk to his mother. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.
