BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Police say a young boy is in critical condition in Baton Rouge after a car swerved and hit him while he was walking to a school bus stop.

WBRZ-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1s6cM15 ) police said it happened around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. Officers said a mechanical problem caused the car’s driver to lose contro, and she hit the boy who was walking along a nearby sidewalk.

Emergency medical personnel took the boy to a local hospital.

Police say the driver has not been cited, and the wreck is still under investigation.

Keith Bromery with East Baton Rouge Schools said the boy was walking to a bus stop when he was hit, and police said he attended Westdale Middle School. Bromery says crisis counselors were brought in to help students affected by the incident.
