KIMBALL, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Highway Patrol says one of its troopers was seriously wounded during a standoff at a rural home northwest of Kimball, but the officer is expected to live.

The agency said late Wednesday that a 42-year-old Kimball man had barricaded himself inside his home Wednesday afternoon. The man was still inside, and negotiations were ongoing.

The Highway Patrol says the 42-year-old and a second man were inside the home and made a phone call to the Brule County Sheriff’s Office “threatening law enforcement.” When authorities responded, a round was fired from the home, striking the trooper.

The agency says the second man walked out unharmed around 8 p.m. He is being questioned.

Numerous state and local agencies were on the scene about 120 miles west of Sioux Falls.
