OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Washington health officials say more than 107,000 people have signed up for or renewed their private insurance through the state exchange for coverage that began on Jan. 1.

Nearly 28,000 are new to the state’s private health insurance system. Washington residents have until Jan. 23 to sign up for and pay for insurance that begins on Feb. 1. Open enrollment continues through Feb. 15 and about 50,000 who bought health insurance last year have not yet renewed their insurance through Washington Healthplanfinder.

In addition to the people buying private insurance through the exchange, another nearly 472,000 have accessed free insurance through Washington’s Medicaid program, known as Washington Apple Health.
