MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - A Berkeley County man has been sentenced to two years in prison after his guilty plea to animal cruelty charges.

Prosecutors say 66-year-old Loney Garrett pleaded guilty in August to 10 counts of animal cruelty after being accused of killing dozens of dogs and leaving them to rot in the backyard of his home near Goose Creek.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Garrett had been charged with 43 counts when he was arrested in 2011.

Defense attorney Melisa Gay says her client neglected the dogs because of poor health. She said he suffered from post-traumatic dist4ress disorder stemming from his time in the military, as well as undergoing prostate cancer surgery in 2012.

Circuit Judge Roger Young also ordered Garrett to serve five years of probation.
