BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Boise firefighters have rescued a man after he went into an icy pond in an attempt to rescue his dog.

Battalion Chief Jim Gross says the 27-year-old man called to tell his girlfriend at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday he was going into the pond to rescue the pet.

Gross says a firefighter edged out onto the ice and got a rope around the man and got him to safety.

He says the man had been in the water about 10 minutes.

Gross says the dog got out of the lake on its own.
