COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State health officials say 14 more people in South Carolina died from the flu last week, even as the total number of flu cases reported declined.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control said Thursday that 38 people have died from the flu so far this season. That compares to just 20 deaths at the same time in the season in January 2014.

The flu is hitting older people the hardest. DHEC says 33 of the 38 people who have died from the illness this season have been 65 and older.

DHEC says the number of positive flu tests in the state during the week from Dec. 27 to Jan. 3 fell by nearly 40 percent, while the number of people hospitalized with the flu remained nearly the same.
