GRASS VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A newly elected Northern California city councilman facing child pornography charges was sworn into office Monday - and resigned two days later.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1tNb7Jl ) Terry Lamphier did not give a reason for stepping down Wednesday.

The 65-year-old was charged Dec. 29 with three misdemeanor counts of knowingly possessing child pornography.

He was elected to the Grass Valley City Council in November, placing second in a field of four candidates - despite allegations that he had misused county computer equipment as a Nevada County supervisor.

Grass Valley Mayor Jason Fouyer said the allegations against Lamphier had become a distraction.

His swearing-in ceremony Monday drew sign-carrying protesters calling for his resignation.
