CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Gov. Maggie Hassan says increasing the state’s supply of natural gas is necessary to make energy more affordable.

Hassan, a Democrat, spoke about the state’s energy future during her inaugural address Thursday at the New Hampshire Statehouse after being sworn in for a second two-year term. This session’s Republican-led Legislature will pose greater political challenges for Hassan than she faced during her first term, when Democrats controlled the House.

Energy prices have increased in New Hampshire for the past several years. In response, energy companies have proposed building a natural gas pipeline and transmission project through New Hampshire with most plans drawing strong local opposition.

Hassan says the state needs to expand its natural gas supply and diversify energy sources, but she did not reference or endorse any specific proposals
