BOONE, N.C. (AP) - Law enforcement in Boone says it now agrees with a medical examiner’s ruling two months ago that a student committed suicide just weeks after starting at Appalachian State University.

Boone Police said Thursday their continued investigation concluded with detectives agreeing with the medical evidence showing that 18-year-old freshman Anna Smith of High Point hanged herself in September.

Authorities, family and friends spent more than a week searching for Smith after she was reported missing from her college dorm on Sept. 3. Her body and a letter were discovered in a heavily wooded area off campus.

Police Lt. Chris Hatton said investigators closed the case after conducting more than 100 interviews with potential witnesses, area residents and employees at nearby businesses.
