HONOLULU (AP) - An associate professor of Native Hawaiian and indigenous politics has been appointed to be general education director for the University of Hawaii’s Manoa campus.

Hokulani Aikau’s appointment was announced earlier this week.

The university says she will play a key part in developing and implementing the general education curriculum. The general education director oversees the staff of the General Education Office, which is administratively part of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Aikau joined the Manoa campus in 2005 as an assistant professor. She has a doctorate degree in American studies from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Memphis and a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from the University of Utah.
