STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) - A Stockton police dog is recovering at a Sacramento veterinary hospital after being stabbed by a man who was eventually killed by officers.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1KoK1Tf) the canine, Rocky, was deployed Tuesday after officers responded to reports of an apparently drunk man who broke into a home and threatened residents.

The suspect, 25-year-old Patrick Wetter, took out a knife and stabbed the Dutch shepherd in the shoulder.

Police say when Wetter threatened the two officers with the knife, he was shot several times. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police say Wetter was a documented gang member who was arrested last year for carrying a concealed knife.

Rocky, a five year veteran of the force, received treatment for his wound and remained under observation.

The officers were not hurt.
