PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A 79-year-old disabled military veteran has died in a Philadelphia row home fire, becoming the city’s first fire fatality of the year.

Firefighters say the man suffered second degree burns in the fire early Thursday at a two-story home in the city’s Ogontz section.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says it appeared the fire started in the kitchen around 1:15 a.m.

Firefighters rescued the man from a nearby couch. He was pronounced dead at Albert Einstein Medical Center less than an hour later.

Officials did not release the man’s name. An investigation is continuing.
