WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - About 40 sheep died when a barn at a farm in Waterloo caught fire.

The fire was reported about 2 a.m. Thursday, and when firefighters arrived the structure was engulfed in flames.

Waterloo Battalion Chief Marty Freshwater says fighting the fire was complicated by high winds. The temperature was about 10 degrees below zero.

It took an hour to extinguish the fire, and crews then had to douse flare-ups.

Farm owner Ron Pullin says he was especially saddened by the death of a prized ewe.

The cause of the fire appeared to be electric heaters that were being used to warm water for the animals.
