RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Award-winning Virginia journalist Bill Sizemore will be joining The Associated Press in Richmond for an eight-week assignment as a reporter covering the 2015 legislative session.

Sizemore recently retired from the Virginian-Pilot after 33 years covering state government, politics and the military. He also served on the investigative team.

Sizemore has 43 years of experience as a newsman, starting in 1972 as the editor of The Clarksville (Virginia) Times and working for various news outlets in reporting and editing roles, including The Roanoke Times and The Times-Herald in Newport News.

At the Pilot, he was part of a two-person team that was a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism for a series of stories looking at defense contractor Blackwater and the United States’ increasing use of private military personnel in overseas hotspots such as Iraq. Additionally, Sizemore has written in-depth stories on Virginia Beach televangelist Pat Robertson’s media empire and former Newport News Delegate Phil Hamilton, who was convicted in a corruption scandal. He also was the Pilot’s lead reporter at the public corruption trial of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. The Virginia Press Association has recognized him for excellence in journalism more than 25 times.

“Bill is an exceptional journalist with deep roots in Virginia that provide him an important perspective on the issues confronting today’s policymakers at the statehouse,” said Steve McMillan, AP’s news editor for Virginia. “He’s tireless when it comes to digging for the kinds of high-impact stories that rise above the incessant drone of the scripted, prepackaged news feed. That kind of accountability work is exactly what readers need and want most.”

Sizemore will work with AP statehouse reporter Alan Suderman covering this year’s 45-day session of the General Assembly.
