AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A former Maine lawmaker caught by police having a sexual encounter in a van in a park-and-ride lot has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the tryst.

Brian Jones pleaded guilty Thursday to disorderly conduct and failure to provide his correct name.

The Kennebec Journal (https://bit.ly/14BDEvM ) reports that he received a 12-month deferred disposition, meaning if he avoids further criminal trouble he can withdraw the pleas and charges will be dismissed.

The 57-year-old Jones, a Democrat from Freedom, was still serving in the state House of Representatives when he and the unnamed woman were caught in West Gardiner in September. Police say Jones refused to give his name.

Jones, a married father, issued a statement saying he was “embarrassed” and blamed it on alcohol abuse.

He lost November’s election.
