OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a homeless man at a camp near downtown Oakland had what appears to be a human skull among his possessions.

California Department of Transportation worker Rick Terry tells the Oakland Tribune (https://bit.ly/1Kqqj9D ) police and Caltrans workers were clearing the camp under a freeway Thursday when a homeless man emerged from his tent carrying the skull in his hand.

The homeless man told authorities he found the skull while digging in the area.

Police did not arrest the man but did get his information in case they need to contact him.

The partially intact cranium is at the coroner’s office, where it will be examined.

Police earlier had issued notices for the half-dozen people who live there to leave the site, which is owned by the state.
