LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Mendon officials have been given the green light to consider buying water from nearby Wellsville.

Representatives from Mendon attended a meeting of the Wellsville City Council this week to make a formal request. Mendon Mayor Ed Buist says his community has struggled to identify major sources of water. High levels of nitrates in one city well forced its closure in 2009.

The Herald Journal (https://bit.ly/1AACYE3 ) reports that Mendon limits annual building permits due to a lack of water and conserves whatever it can.

The Wellsville City Council agreed unanimously that Mendon could explore buying water. No water rights or shares would be sold.

Wellsville Councilman Carl Leatham says the city has an obligation to help its neighbors.
