PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - New Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza says he will retain Susan Lusi as superintendent of city schools.

The mayor said in a statement that in the four years Lusi has led the schools, graduation and attendance rates have increased, while the dropout and chronic student absenteeism rates have decreased.

Schools are also beginning to see improvements in reading proficiency for younger students.

Elorza called Lusi “a respected educator who brings great energy and expertise to her work,” and says the two share a vision of reforming city schools.

Lusi’s contract, scheduled to expire in June, will be extended through the 2015-2016 school year.

Elorza will also retain Lynne McCormack as Director of Art, Culture and Tourism; while Adrienne Southgate will serve as Acting City Solicitor.
