CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Former Marshall quarterback Michael Payton says his phone hasn’t stopped ringing since finding out he’s going into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Payton was among a class of 15 players and two coaches announced Friday.

Payton will be the sixth inductee from Marshall. Among them were former teammate Troy Brown and their coach, Jim Donnan.

Payton led the Thundering Herd to the Division I-AA championship in 1992. He was a two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year. He also won the Walter Payton Award as the top player in I-AA in 1992, when he threw for 3,610 yards and 31 touchdowns.

In the championship game, Payton drove the Thundering Herd down the field for Willie Merrick’s game-winning 22-yard field goal in a 31-28 win over Youngstown State.
