EVANS CITY, Pa. (AP) - Police say a western Pennsylvania man was driving under the influence when he killed a pedestrian with his vehicle while driving in a shopping center parking lot.

The most serious charge facing 62-year-old John Turcic, of Valencia, is vehicular homicide while driving under the influence. That carries a mandatory-minimum three- to six-year prison sentence.

Adams Township police say Turcic drank a glass of vodka before driving to a supermarket to fill a prescription.

On his way, Turcic cut through the parking lot of a nearby restaurant and hit 80-year-old William Kvindis, who was walking with his girlfriend. The Mars man died a few hours later of head injuries.

Turcic faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 3. His defense attorney did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.
